I am experienced in supporting children and young people over the age of 10, who are grieving.
Children and young people are affected by losses in a different way to an adult.
This is because their understanding of the loss and what has happened very much depends on their age .
Children and young people would be affected by the loss of a family member, whether through death or separation, if a beloved pet has died, if there is a change o their routine, or perhaps a friendship or relationship has ended.
I am aware that it is only natural that children and young people might not want to talk to someone they don't know, especially an adult, at first.
Building a good relationship with your child involves me and your child getting to know each other, so I would spend time building their trust and confidence. until your child feels able to trust me to help them and support them with their very personal worries and concerns.
Having the chance to talk to a trained counsellor about what has happened will help your child process their confused feelings and emotions.
Grief can feel strange and overwhelming, but when a child or young person understands that their feelings are valid and that it's okay to grieve, then they begin to feel less scared and confused.
